How Tall is a Giraffe? The giraffe is the tallest land animal alive and can grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) tall! A modest two story home is 15 to 20 feet tall so a giraffe can be taller than a house. No wonder a group of giraffes is called a 'tower'! Being so tall can have its challenges. How does its heart pump blood up to its brain? With blood pressure two and half times greater than ours, there’s no problem when giraffes stand upright. But what happens when they bend down to take a drink? When lowering their heads - hypertension could cause a stroke - and lifting their heads up again could make them faint! The giraffe has an amazing work-around: a vein in the neck that cuts off blood to the head when they bend down, and opens up again when they straighten up. In spite of having this fix in place, Giraffes get most of their water from plants and can go longer without drinking than a camel!
