The Radiated Tortoise (Astrochelys radiata) is native to Madagascar. Tortoises, unlike turtles, are solely terrestrial reptiles. They have soft bodies encased in a top bony shell (carapace) and a lower bony shell (plastron), which protects them from predators. Radiated tortoises are large (weighing up to 35 lb) and long-lived. The oldest radiated tortoise ever recorded was Tu'i Malila, who died at an estimated age of 188. The radiated tortoise has more striking and complex markings than those of other star-patterned tortoises and is believed to be the most beautiful of all the tortoise species. Radiated tortoises are classified as critically endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss, being poached for food and overexploitation in the pet trade.
