The Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) is a midsize, stocky rabbit with large hind feet, long ears, and a short, fluffy tail that resembles a cotton ball. Eastern cottontails prefer open brushy or forest-border cover and feed almost entirely on plants. By converting plant food into animal matter, rabbits are an important link in the food chain. Rabbits normally move slowly in short hops or jumps, but when frightened they can achieve speeds up to 18 miles per hour and will zig-zag to confuse a pursuing predator! Eastern cottontails have a wide distribution from southern Manitoba and Quebec to Central and northwestern South America and are common throughout their range.
