The American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is one of the two living species of Alligator, a genus within the family Alligatoridae, and is native only to the southeastern United States. In 1967, the alligator was listed as an endangered species. A cooperative effort by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state wildlife agencies, and the creation of large, commercial alligator farms saved these unique animals. In 1987, the Fish and Wildlife Service declared the American alligator fully recovered. Learn more about alligators at: https://www.calacademy.org/exhibits/the-swamp
