African Elephants (Loxodonta africana) are the largest living land animal, and are distinguished by their high level of intelligence, methods of communication and complex social structure. They're slightly larger than their Asian cousins and have large ears shaped like the continent of Africa and have one 'finger' at the tip of their trunks. The fusion of the nose and upper lip, elephant trunks are perhaps the most versatile tool in the animal kingdom, and is used for breathing (also as a snorkel under water), smelling (four times as sensitive as a bloodhound's), grasping (can lift 770 lbs), gently touching and producing sound. Once plentiful, surviving populations of African elephants are pressured by poachers and human settlements and are listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as ‘vulnerable.’ Learn more about elephant conservation at: https://www.leonardodicaprio.org/elephant-crisis-fund/
