The American Manatee, also called the Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostrus) is a subspecies of the West Indian Manatee. Their year-round distribution is restricted to coastal estuaries and rivers of Florida. These gentle marine mammals are large aquatic relatives of the elephant, and are listed as ‘Endangered’ by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
