Horseshoe Crabs (Limulus polyphemus) are among the world’s oldest and most interesting creatures. The earliest horseshoe crabs inhabited shallow coastal seas even before the dinosaurs arrived, and remain much the same today. The Delaware Bay region is home to the largest population of the American horseshoe crab, which is found along the western shores of the Atlantic Ocean from Maine to the Yucatan. Another three species live in the coastal waters from Japan to Indonesia. Although it resembles and behaves like a crab - the horseshoe crab is really more closely related to scorpions, ticks and land spiders that have five pairs of walking legs and no antennae. Over-harvesting for medical purposes, for bait, as well as the loss of valuable spawning habitat to coastal development threatens the American horseshoe crab population.
