Strawberry Hermit Crabs (Coenobita prelates) are easy to identify because their bodies are the color of ripe strawberries. Like other hermit crabs, they have soft abdomens and protect them by occupying discarded shells. To guarantee a perfect fit, the crab will first check out the opening of an empty shell. Then the shell is rolled to clean out any debris and make sure no one is still at home! When the crab finally makes the switch, sometimes he'll hold onto the old shell. It's not uncommon for a hermit crab to have 'buyers remorse' and decide that the old home was better than the new one! Strawberry hermit crabs are found living close to the shorelines of Indonesia, Malaysia, Madagascar, Japan and Australia.
