Seahorses have heads like horses, tails like monkeys, pouches like kangaroos, and are the only family in the animal kingdom where males get pregnant! The Pacific Seahorse (Hippocampus ingen) is one of the largest of the 34 known species of seahorses in the world. Its name comes from the Greek hippos or “horse” and campus, “sea monster.” Pacific seahorses make their homes in southern California bays and coastal wetlands. These animals maintain a delicate foothold in selected estuaries, and are sensitive to habitat disturbance from human activities.
