Typically, in the spring and summer, winds blow south down the Pacific Coast of North America, pushing warmer surface waters away from the shore. This allows cooler, nutrient-rich water, to rise from the bottom of the ocean - which nourishes tiny organisms called phytoplankton. These microscopic plants contribute to the base of the food chain. Yet unusual weather patterns have disturbed the marine ecosystem, and the fish of the Pacific are often unable to find enough food. Scientists are asking: Are these changes produced by normal climate fluctuations, or the result of global warming?
