Known in Maori as the ‘Hoiho’, the Yellow-eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes) was awarded New Zealand's Bird of the Year in 2019. The penguin has become a voice for New Zealand’s unique native birds, raising awareness about their habitat and the threats contributing to their decline. Listed on the IUCN Red List as critically endangered, the yellow-eyed penguin is considered one of the rarest penguins on Earth. With pale yellow heads and large yellow eyes, Yellow-eyed penguins have earned their name! The Chinstrap Penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus) is a species of penguin which inhabits a variety of islands and shores in the Southern Pacific and Antarctic Oceans. Its name comes from a narrow black band under its head which makes it appear as if it were a 'strap' holding on a black helmet, making it one of the most easily identified types of penguin. These little penguins are only about 28 in (71 cm) tall and weigh about 10 lb (5 kg). Chinstraps may be small, but they are the boldest penguins of all!
